First Gauging Run (East Croydon - Sandilands) |
|
Monday/Tuesday 5/6th July 1999 (2330 - 0330) | |
See photos below text: - As reported here, the first gauging run east of Dingwall road took place last night. Tram 2535 left Therapia Lane depot at 20:15 and made several runs around the loop. The HMRI approved this section last week. At 22:30, the tram stopped in George Street, the front cover was removed and the Unimog coupled up. Eventually at about 23:30, the tram was slowly towed into Platform 1 at East Croydon Tramstop. The HMRI were watching every move with flashlights on the Pantograph and underneath. Once in the Platform, tape measures came out and distances from the doors to the platform checked. It seamed quite close to me. More worrying was the close proximity of the Glass roof of the station with the pantograph and the inspector went up on a hydrolic lift to measure it. The tram then moved forwards towards the NLA tower before reversing back through platform 2 to Dingwall Rd. Checks were made on this platform before continuing towards Sandilands. Running slowly towards Lebanon Road, residents looked out of windows to watch. More checks made with the platform at Lebanon Road and the tram continued across Chepstow Road and on to Sandilands. The Unimog switched to Rail wheels and the tram was hauled on into the Platform at about 0200. Whilst the HMRI measured the platform, the Unimog was detached and moved by Road to the other end of the Tram. To everyone's surprise, it then pushed the tram down the cutting to the point tips before returning via the crossover and repeating the exercise on the Westbound Track. The tram then slowly returned to Croydon on the other line with Checks made with the platform again at Lebanon Road. On arrival at East Croydon Platform 3, the tram was moved forwards and then pushed back through Platform 2 to complete the final crossovers. Once finished the tram was hauled down to Dingwall road, the Unimog detached and the tram returned under its own power to Therapia Lane at about 03:30. Interestingly the whole exercise was carried out without a Police Escort. A small band of Enthusiasts including several regulars of this site observed it all - It was good to meet everyone! Pictures are available on this Page and are also in the relevant sections of the Gallery. The next big thing is the Powered run to Sandilands, scheduled for July 14th 1999. |
